Vegan Chocolate and Orange Hot Cross Buns

Vegan Chocolate and Orange Hot Cross Buns
Can anyone else not believe that Easter is just around the corner? Probably something to do with the snow that just doesn’t seem to want to go away – but on the plus side at least us Brits have loads to discuss on our favourite topic of conversation, the weather! To try and get myself more in the springtime Easter mood I am sitting here in front of a lovely bunch of daffodils sharing this delicious hot cross bun recipe with you all!
I love hot cross buns and to be honest I happily eat them all year round, but I find they taste especially delicious at this time of year. Sliced in half, toasted and with a little spread melting into the warm buns makes me a very happy woman.

The traditional recipe of course is stuffed with currants and raisins, which I absolutely love. But I also love chocolate and the melting chocolate chips in these buns on a background of tangy orange and warming spices is just divine.

Vegan Chocolate and Orange Hot Cross Buns

For the bread

  • 150ml almond milk
  • 4 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 300g plain flour
  • 2 tbsp golden caster sugar
  • 7g dried yeast
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • pinch of salt
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 40g plain chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp agave syrup

For the crosses

  • 45g plain flour
  • 3 tbsp water

  1. Place the flour, sugar, yeast, mixed spice, ginger, salt and orange zest into a bowl and combine.
  2. Gradually add in the almond milk and oil, combining to form a smooth dough.
  3. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for five to ten minutes until the surface is smooth and has a little spring to it when pushed.
  4. Leave to prove in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently knead the dough once again, this time incorporating the chocolate chips into the mixture so they are evenly spread within the dough.
  6. Divide into 6 balls and place into a lightly greased tin and allow to prove for a further 45 minutes.
  7. For the crosses, mix together the flour and water to form a thick paste. Pipe crosses on top of the buns.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C until lightly brown and sounding hollow when tapped.
  9. Brush the warm buns lightly with a little agave syrup.

* Add a little more milk if too dry or a little more flour if wet or sticky.

Serve and enjoy!
